Robot overview

MagicDog-W brings wheel-driven travel and legged movement into one robot. It gives development teams a way to examine how a mobile platform changes its movement and posture as the route or surface changes.

Its expandable backplate supports additional hardware, making the robot relevant to projects that combine mobility with sensing or onboard computing. The complete payload should be assessed alongside the route and required operating time.

The Robot Group helps UK organisations scope the application, review configuration and development access, and establish a practical evaluation.

Technical Breakthroughs

1. Combined wheel and leg movement

Seven-inch pneumatic wheels work alongside articulated legs, allowing MagicDog-W to roll, step and adjust its posture. This gives researchers a platform for investigating different movement strategies on a defined test route.

2. Coordinated body and head control

Seventeen motors coordinate the legs, wheels and head. The platform supports bidirectional movement and changes in body height and posture. Evaluation should focus on the movements and transitions your application actually requires.

3. Multiple sensors for mobile applications

The published sensor suite includes LiDAR, depth vision, cameras and ultrasonic sensing. These inputs support work on environmental perception and navigation. We help identify the sensing and data-access requirements for the selected application.

4. An expandable platform for project hardware

A mounting backplate supports additional perception devices, computing modules and other peripherals. MagicLab lists a maximum payload of 10 kg. Payload planning should account for mounts, cabling and all added equipment, with performance evaluated in the intended configuration.

5. Development resources and ROS 2 interfaces

MagicLab publishes MagicDog-W developer documentation with Python and C++ APIs, alongside ROS 2 resources. Supported development work includes motion commands, sensor access, robot status and navigation. We help confirm the interfaces and hardware needed for your software.

Deployment

+ Scalability

Define a representative route and the data the robot needs to collect or use. An initial evaluation could compare movement strategies, test navigation repeatability or measure how an added sensor performs during travel.

The Robot Group helps establish:

  • Surface conditions, obstacles and required wheel-to-leg transitions.
  • Total payload, mounting position and power requirements.
  • Sensor access, SDK compatibility and software responsibilities.
  • Communications, charging, supervision and operating procedures.
  • Route completion, data quality and other acceptance measures.

Results from the first route can guide changes to the payload, software or operating method before the application is extended.
